“Uncle John’s Outdoors goes national, on this great outdoor website”
I evolved into an outdoor writer not by way of some journalism school that insist that I dot my I-s and cross my T-s, but by way of writing Army Police investigative reports that were so dry it drove me crazy. I’m sure it drives Mona crazy trying to edit me but that’s what editors are for. Well, I caught a lot of bad guys and learned to write every thing in chronological order, but I still hated paperwork until I retired and found I could spin a yarn about hunting as well as the next guy. Of course I found out later I probably had more technical gun and hunting savvy than 110 % of the state outdoor writers.
I just couldn’t bare to write about the “Looky what I caught” stuff that clogs the local outdoor magazines. It all boils down to them trying to pontificate some sort of method on a generic scale that only some elite outdoorsman can do, while trying to sell you some gear from a multitude of sponsors, making sure no one else gets in a word edgewise.
My goal as an outdoor writer is to make you want to go hunting as a personal adventure, while making it a family endeavor, but not a competitive sport. No, hunting a big game animal is not a football game, but along the trail of a big buck you may find the enlightenment of the essence of hunting.
Robert Ruark of course had it right the first time when he wrote the “Old Man and the Boy,” My mother became quite a fan of Ruark, as she was a script writer for WNBC in New York. Evidently they crossed paths a few times, enough that she read me most of his works before I could read myself. The concept of “Pass it on,” originated with Robert Ruark, so this is why I end all of my articles with the note for the reader to pass on the lesson.
Uncle John’s Outdoors is not about “Looky what I caught.” I take the adventure of hunting and then tell you how I accomplished the goal, and I do this by just getting to go hunting, not killing something.
Yes, every once in a while I get lucky. Yes, I will tell you what I use on my trips. That gear is my stuff too, not some hired sponsor who wants me to say great things about something I was paid to use. If it works I call up the sponsor and ask them to come advertise with us, because I already know it’s a good product.
Every month you get a nice Uncle John article exclusively at the best outdoor and travel magazine in the state, Louisiana Road Trips Magazine. When a group of bunny huggers bought out my local news paper the hunting writer had to go. So a constant feed of Uncle John information was temporarily halted, much to the reader’s sorrow who constantly ask me what happened to my column on hunting.
