Creating Categories

Navigate to Catalog > Categories in the admin menu to create new categories and manage your existing categories.

Adding a New Category

  1. Click the “Add new” button in the upper button bar
  2. Toggle the Basic/Advanced button in the upper left to display more options in each of the sections
  3. Fill in the Category info section
    1. Name is required (denoted by red asterisk)
    2. Other fields are optional and would be filled in based on what information you wish to display in your category information
      1. Description - Add via editor
      2. Parent Category - Select if you wish to nest categories and select the category the new one should nest under
      3. Picture - Upload file if you wish to include photos for categories
  4. Display
    1. Published - must be checked for category to show in store
    2. Show on home page - Checking box will display a category on home page if your template contains a section to display them
    3. Include in top menu - Display in the top menu bar. If this category is a subcategory, then ensure that its parent category also has this property enabled.
    4. Allow customers to select page size - Determines whether customers are allowed to select the page size from a predefined list of options.
      1. Page size options - Determines what page size options are provided
    5. Price range filtering
    6. Enter price range manually - Check to enter price range manually, otherwise the automatic calculation of price range is enabled (based on prices of available products). Set the price range manually if you have complex discount rules.
      1. Price ‘from’ & Price ‘to’ - provides manual price range
    7. Display order - Set the category display order.
  5. Mappings
    1. Discounts - Shows the discounts associated with a product and can add a discount to the product
    2. Limited to customer roles - Select customer roles for which the category will be shown. Leave empty if you want this category to be visible to all users.
    3. Limited to stores - Option to limit this category to a certain store. If you have multiple stores, choose one or several from the list. If you don't use this option just leave this field empty.
  6. SEO
    1. Search engine friendly page name is automatically generated from product name if you leave it blank, but you can customize that using the format of “the-best-product” where spaces are replaced with hyphens.
    2. Meta title - this displays in the browser tab and is used by search engines. Foremost Media recommends always filling in this information
    3. Meta keywords - this does not carry much weight any longer as most search engines no longer use them
    4. Meta description - fill in field describing page content and limit to a max of 155-160 characters
  7. Products
    1. Add products to a category
      1. On an existing product it will show products already mapped to a category.
