Google Trends is a free market research tool that can help identify popular searches and how they are trending over time.
This tool allows you to research any keyword or topic you wish to learn more about, and determine how many people are searching for that term over time. You can also see if search volume for that term or service you offer is growing or decreasing.
Let's take a look at a real-life example of how a company could use Google Trends to grow their business. One of our clients makes tarps, replacement awnings, and canvas covers, etc. Over the years, we've noticed a spike in calls from areas of the country that have been impacted by severe weather. The spike typically occurs 10 days or so after the storm event. By monitoring Google trends, this company can use the data found to target their online advertising efforts to the top 5 states.
This same company could use the tool to plan their advertising spend for the year by month. By increasing the date range, we can see that there are not many severe weather searches in the months of October, November, and December. We now know that it is more beneficial to decrease spending during winter months and increase spend during the spring and summer months. They could also use this trend to predict inventory and labor needs.
